I'm coming to the realization that I have little hope of doing the final carving of mandolin plates without a convex fingerplane. To that end, if anyone has one they're looking to part with, I'm interested in buying one -- preferably somewhere between 12 to 18 mm, but I'm not picky (or experienced, take your choice). Home Depot of all place sells a very small "Buck Bros" plane, probably closer to 3/4 or 7/8 of an inch wide blade. I've actually had great luck with it. It could use a shim behind the blade to close the throat opening, but if you get it set up just right, it's a really handy (and cheap!) tool. |

You might want to check with Metropolitan Music. They also have pretty good prices on the Ibex planes. |

Terry, the Kunz version or the Stanley #100 squirrel tail plane (3 1/2" long, 1" iron) is a handy little plane for small jobs like this. I did a quick google, you can for it for $11.95 here. Jay, I have some Ibex planes and they are OK, but my little home made wooden ones work equally well or better. I cut up old but good plane irons and grind them to the desired size, and they stay sharper than the Ibex planes which have CV irons. Here is a lousy shot of a pair I made some years ago. I used birch for the bodies on these, I have since made some with beech and they hold up better. The best part is that it is very easy to change the sole's size or curvature on them if you need to.

Someone here on the forum made a version of these, and even quoted me a price. From overseas if I remember. |
